What does Holistic Living actually mean and how does it affect you?

Holistic living means having a life that is all-encompassing, and incorporates the Whole Person, Body, Mind and Spirit.

I truly believe that Holistic Living encompasses all parts of our lives: Self, Family, Relationships, Work, Interests, Spirituality, and Health.

So let's start here (check all that apply):

I'm here because I ....

  1. I have chronic stress and back pain, tight hamstrings and hips.
  2. I worry that I'm not the "right" shape, size, ethnicity or age to "do" yoga and meditation and not sure how it exactly can help me with my unique needs and goals.
  3. I want to feel stronger, more flexible and balanced inside and out but have no idea where to begin.
  4. I find it hard to believe that the only way I can fight these symptoms is by taking prescription medication and would like to learn a more natural and holistic approach to manage pain and stress but not sure if that's possible.

In this article, by Tianna Hicklin, Ph.D., from National Institutes of Health:,  "Yoga eases moderate to severe chronic low back pain" Hicklin says that "... carefully adapted set of yoga postures may help reduce pain and improve the ability to walk and move."

Hicklin further states that ".... structured yoga program may be a reasonable alternative to physical therapy for people with chronic low back pain."

I'm Jen James, and it's my goal to use my personal experiences and training's to teach you how to naturally and successfully manage your chronic pain and stress in a way that doesn't seem confusing or complicated.

I've always said Yoga is for Every Body.  My style of teaching is all about making yoga accessible and to manage pain safely.

I realized, as a curvy woman, that all ages, sizes and abilities could “do” Yoga and Meditation. I became stronger and more flexible, mentally and physically, every week I practiced.

I was thrilled with these results, but knew I wasn’t done. I continued to refine my approach and further my education to learn more about pain management. That’s when I discovered an innovative approach to pain management called Muscle Re-Balancing. I then combined yoga, mindful meditation and muscle re-balancing to my teachings while guiding other people through my unique system.

The results were incredible… my students were experiencing being more relaxed, rejuvenated, and a boon in their mental health instead of always being tired, uninspired, and filled with stress and anxiety.

But not only that…

I started noticing how the system I was creating was leading to my students saying they also felt stronger, more flexible and balanced from attending my classes and private sessions. They would even say they look forward to our sessions together instead of what most people say when they “have to” exercise, go to the gym, etc. and then the next day they are sore from their “workout” or even worse, they have to go to the doctor because of recurring back spasms, neck pain and tingling in the extremities.

And this wasn’t just with the young and flexible women in my classes ... people who are 65 and over (some are even men!) that are all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and abilities were getting these results too!

When you achieve more peace while also gaining strength and flexibility, you realize your potential for healing inside and out is possible. It’s all in the mindset.

Anyway, that’s why I’m so passionate about helping people learn how to tap into their power to heal themselves while utilizing my method of Yoga, Mindful Meditation and Muscle Re-Balancing. I’ve seen firsthand how dramatically it can lead to feeling stronger, more flexible and balanced without all the frustration of trying to figure it all out on your own or on the “cheap”. Knowing that you either pay for your health now or later.

As per my mentor, in his podcast interview on backpainliberation, Lee Albert states "that back pain, and all sorts of chronic pain conditions, are due to the body being out of alignment."

Albert further states that "This crookedness is caused by muscle imbalances"

In this article: "Types of Yoga" by Karen Barr, MD in Spine-Health.com

Barr discusses "There are many different types of yoga, and it is important to choose a form that is appropriate for each individual's ...."

The first mention is Iyengar Yoga (which I teach!) Barr says that "Because of this attention to detail and the modification of poses, Iyengar yoga is often a good form of yoga for people with back pain"

In this article, "8 Tips to Alleviate Back Pain" from John Johnson in healthyhappylonglife.com

Johnson explains "....Chronic back pain, however, won’t simply go away and could get worse if not addressed properly."

Strengthen your core and Stretching are the first 2 mentioned that I would like to talk further about.

When you do Gentle Yoga for back care and focus on alignment and breath you will be strengthening your core muscles in a subtle way.  Think strengthening from within and not doing any crazy exercises that end up hurting your back even more.

Regarding stretching, I really caution my students to rethink the word.

Doing warm-ups and gentle stretching is good but stretching can be overdone.

Think about how often we already bend forward to work on our digital devices, pick up things and drive a car, to name a few.  We are such a forward bending society that we really should counter-act all of that forward bending.  So we can create more muscle balancing throughout the body. That in turn, helps with chronic pain management.
